Bergamot is a citrus plant native to Calibria, Italy and named after the Italian city of Pergamum. The bergamot tree (Citrus bergamia) grows to about 5 meters tall and the fruit is about 7 centimeters in diameter, slightly smaller than an orange. Bergamot essential oil is extracted by cold-pressing the skin of the unripe fruit. It is the only citrus fruit whose main components are linalool (about 16%) and linalyl acetate (about 34%) rather than dilimonene. Bergamot essential oil has a total of 175 components and has a very complex and rich aroma among citrus essential oils. It starts with a limey lemon-orange scent, followed by a floral freesia-like aroma, and finally a herbal balsamic vinegar finish. Bergamot essential oil is also used as an important flavoring in Earl Gray tea. Bergamotene, one of the most important top notes in perfume, is a low-volatile coumarin contained in bergamot. It is a phototoxic ingredient to the skin and should therefore be avoided in sunscreen products.
